raising siblings
April 10, 2026 is National Sibling Day and I want to take some time to reflect on the siblings that I happen to be raising. Let’s chat about each kid and then about their relationships…
Kid #1: My Sweet Teen
Bookends in Iceland.
Kid #1 just turned 13 and is handling the twists and turns of middle school, braces and so many changes with grace. She is the best picker of friends and I love the kids she brings home. Kid #1 is kind to the new kid, not afraid to be herself and has the self confidence that I dream of as an almost-40 year old woman. She’s such a fun older sister, learning responsibility without trying to be a mini-mom and manages having two brothers with as much patience as possible. Her and Kid #2 are chaotic besties that have such a strong connection. With Kid #3, her toddler brother, she helps him without any hint of annoyance.
Kid #2: My Middle Man
Kid #2 picking blackberries last summer.
Kid #2 is freshly 9 and in the throes of elementary school. He started in a new school building this year and is managing greater independence this year, more sports activities and homework. He’s the life of the party and is always practicing his knock knock routine. He’s the best middle child we could have asked for - he is sympathetic and respectful of his teenage sister’s emotions and boundaries and also ready to jump in and play with the baby.
Kid #3: The Forever Baby
Kid #3 at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens
Kid #3 is 3.5 but will always be called “the baby” in our family. He’s the classic little brother, running sneak attacks at slumber parties, wavering between sweet and short-tempered and thinks his big siblings are the coolest people on earth. He likes to say that his siblings are his “favorite boy and girl.”
My Crew
I couldn’t be more in love with my crew of 3. Raising siblings is tough but I absolutely love watching the relationships they are building together.
