K’s Banana Bread: The Story Behind Frederick's K's Banana Bread
Sometimes the best local businesses begin with something simple—a family recipe, a favorite tradition, and someone willing to take a chance.
That's exactly the story behind K's Banana Bread, a Frederick-based micro-bakery that's turning homemade banana bread into something truly special.
More Than Just Banana Bread
If you're imagining an ordinary loaf, think again.
K's Banana Bread offers delicately moist, handcrafted loaves baked fresh in small batches from a licensed shared commercial kitchen right here in Frederick, Maryland.
Alongside the classic recipe, you'll find creative flavors like:
Cinnamon Swirl
Chocolate Chip
Cookies & Cream
Pistachio Chocolate Chip
Seasonal favorites like Summer S'mores
Each loaf is available for local pre-orders, and many flavors can even be shipped nationwide.
We tried the Classic and Chocolate Chip loaves, and they disappeared almost immediately. Ordering was incredibly simple, pickup was seamless, and everything was beautifully packaged—making it just as enjoyable to give as it is to eat.
A Family Tradition That Became a Business
Long before there was a business, there was a family recipe.
Owner Kenneyeh grew up watching her mother make banana bread for special occasions. She began baking before she was ten years old, eventually creating her own recipe and refining it over the years until it became uniquely hers.
During college, friends began requesting loaves for holiday gatherings. Later, as a wife, mother, and stay-at-home parent, she became known as the person whose banana bread disappeared first at family events.
In 2025, she started sharing extra loaves with neighbors—sometimes packaged in nothing more than a simple Ziploc bag.
The response was immediate.
Encouraged by the excitement, she began selling loaves every Friday and sharing updates on Facebook. What started as a passion project quickly gained a loyal following.
Choosing Quality Over Convenience
Like many food entrepreneurs, Kenneyeh encountered unexpected obstacles.
Maryland's cottage food laws didn't allow her recipe to be produced exactly as she wanted. Rather than alter the quality of her banana bread, she chose a more challenging path.
She earned the required certifications, secured insurance, and began baking from a licensed shared commercial kitchen, allowing her to stay true to the recipe she'd perfected over decades.
That decision helped transform K's Banana Bread from a neighborhood favorite into a growing small business.
Comfort Food, One Loaf at a Time
Today, K's Banana Bread ships nationwide, appears at local pop-ups and farmers markets, and bakes as many as 50 loaves each week.
Kenneyeh is constantly creating new seasonal flavors inspired by the time of year, from pumpkin and apple cinnamon in the fall to Summer S'mores during warmer months.
But no matter the flavor, her goal remains the same.
For her, banana bread isn't simply breakfast or dessert—it's comfort food. It's community. It's sharing a piece of home with every customer.
