routines on the road

Vacation throws routine out of whack but kids need some structure. Here are routines we drop and routines we keep on vacations…

Drop

  • Homework. We are learning about the world. Unless kids are missing a significant amount of school, it can wait.

  • Standard transport. We don’t always rent cars. We try to use public transit as much as possible. We had the best time on buses in Mexico.

  • Our same old food staples. Vacation is about trying new food and things. We even get local snacks for the kids.

Keep

  • Family meals. We have structured meals with conversation. We love to use our trip convo cards during these meals.

  • Afternoon quiet time. Mommy and toddler nap, big kids get screens

  • Lunch out, dinner in. Our fav hack to eat well and cheap without grumpy kids! For dinner, we eat at the rental or hotel, or get room service.

  • Leftovers and snacks. No hungry bellies on vacation. We love accommodations with fridge and microwave so we can reheat leftovers. We also bring clips and tupperware to keep snacks fresh.
