What you actually need to pack when traveling as a family
There are thousands of packing lists, both paid and free, available on any platform for packing and family trips. But here’s the thing: those lists only cover the obvious basics (of course your kiddo needs a swimsuit for your upcoming cruise) and forget to mention the little things.
As a mom of 3 who’s been traveling for 13 years with my family, I’ve learned a few things about what to pack—and what to leave at home. Don’t just take my word for it though, let your family create their own packing list with our printable activity here.
But if you don’t trust your kids to pack more than their iPads and candy (I certainly wouldn’t put it past my 8-year old…), see our recommendations for the absolute essentials you need for family trips.
For TODDLERS
Surprise Presents to Open on the Trip: There is nothing more stressful than a restless toddler on a long flight or car ride with nothing to do. Prepare for long stretches during your travels, and having a surprise activity or toy can be the best way to get your little one excited! We love the water painting books and our collection of action figures, both easy and mess-free activities that will keep your child engaged instead of asking “Are we there yet?” for the hundredth time.
Sleep Comfort Items: Think beyond just pajamas and slippers to other things that help your child get comfy in their bed at home. Do they have a stuffed animal they always cuddle? Or maybe a picture book you read together in the evening? While maybe everything won’t fit in your suitcase, bringing 1-2 comfort items can help them adapt to a new sleeping environment.
For Elementary-Aged Children
Chargers for electronics: As kids get older, their needs shift slightly—but a few key items still make a big difference. Be sure to pack chargers for tablets, watches, and headphones so devices are always ready for travel days and downtime. A portable power bank can also be a lifesaver, keeping devices charged during long flights, car rides, or days out exploring.
First aid: a small first aid kit comes in handy for scraped knees, blisters, or minor bumps from a full day of exploring. Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any medications your child might need, so you’re ready for little emergencies on the go.
For TWEENS & TEENS
Chargers & Electronics: Phones, tablets, headphones, and portable gaming devices are usually essential for teens. Don’t forget chargers and a portable power bank to keep devices ready for downtime, travel, and capturing memories on the go.
Personal Care Items: Teens appreciate having their own toiletries and grooming essentials, including deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, and any skincare products they use daily. Having familiar items helps them feel comfortable and confident while away from home (and it also helps them be a little less stinky on a long day!)
For PARENTS & ADULTS
Snacks & Food Storage: Keep kids’ hunger at bay with easy snack solutions. Bring Tupperware to store leftovers or portion out snacks, and chip clips to keep bags of chips, crackers, or cereal fresh while on the go. Having these on hand makes travel days, park visits, and long drives much smoother.
Hydration: Reusable water bottles are essential for staying hydrated while sightseeing, hiking, or waiting in lines. Bonus points for bottles that fit in backpacks or have a built-in straw for easy sipping. Just make sure they are empty when you go through security!
