our fav food stories

Freshly made sopes during our cooking class in Mexico!

We are a major foodie family. Life is too short to eat bad food, and I’m definitely not doing it on vacation. Here’s some of our top food moments on trips…

  • Food tour in little Havana, Miami: we discovered our love of food tours! We loved the empanadas, baked goods and coffee.

  • Cooking class with private chef in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: We loved our experience with Chef Wendy Galeana in Puerto Vallarta. We learned about the history of Mexican food and loved making our own sopes!

  • Recreating lamb stew in Iceland 8 years later: we went to Iceland in 2016 and 2024. We were able to recreate a photo of me feeding my oldest kiddo some Icelandic stew at the same restaurant we had visited 8 years prior!

  • Night market in Merida, Mexico: the night market and food vendors were incredible. We tried so many different items, cochinita pibil, relleno negro, salbutes and finished it off with a guanabana paleta!

  • Shrimp guy on beach: our first day in puerto Vallarta, a guy came over with shrimp on a stick. In my rusty Spanish, I tried to overpay and he helped us.

  • Bringing a bag of tamales into a resort spa: post food tour, I had to rush to a spa appointment. Did I bring a bag of 4 tamales into a fancy spa? Yes. It was fine.

  • Ceviche and a pile of hamburgers Mexico: we had a local chef in Merida. She made us an incredible ceviche dinner one night. We raved and she said, it’s fine, that’s just what we have here but wait until you try my hamburgers! Spoiler alert - she made 20 burgers for the 5 of us.

  • Lava rye bread in Iceland: since it’s got volcanic soil, a traditional Icelandic specialty is rye bread cooked over 24 hours in the a buried pot. It was great!

  • Coconut candy in Mexico: chewy and fresh coconut candy from a road side stand in the jungle? Yes.

  • Snack tacos in San Diego: the place our kids invented “snack taco” for when you’re just a little hungry.

  • Beachside seafood in Puerto Rico: the moment when a lovely woman brought me a full menu while sitting on a public beach in PR. She took cards too!
