Why Language Learning is a Core Value for Our Family
why bother? english is widely spoken. As travelers, our goal is to step outside our comfort zones, engage deeply with local cultures, and foster authentic connections. A crucial part of this journey happens before we even pack our bags. In our household, regular language learning is not just an educational goal—it is a foundational family value.
Even if a destination speaks English, making the effort to learn even a few words in the local language is going to have a huge impact on the experience and your connection to locals.
Currently, our focal language is Spanish, and making space for it in our daily routines has completely transformed the way we approach exploration.
The Deep Value of Cultivating a Focus Language
For our family, sticking with a consistent focus language like Spanish allows us to build a meaningful, long-term connection rather than just skimming the surface. Immersing ourselves in a language creates a "culture at home" dynamic. It expands our worldview, teaches our children cultural empathy, and sharpens cognitive development. More importantly, it shifts our travel philosophy from being passive sightseers to becoming respectful, active participants in the communities we visit.
Why Spanish? There are significant Latino communities in our area, offering opportunities for all of us to practice. Language lives and dies with application and regular usage. When we don’t have any trips planned to the Spanish-speaking world, we can go grab some pupusas and practice!
Why We Always Pick Up the Basics Before We Go
Even when traveling to destinations where we aren't completely fluent (like our upcoming trip to a destination where German is the main language), we make it a hard rule to try to pick up basic vocabulary before setting foot in a new country.
Here’s the basic vocab we will work on before our trip:
Manners: Please / thank you / you’re welcome
Basic salutations: Hello / good bye / how are you
Food ordering: Fav food items, sections of a menu
Intro / emergencies: Hi, my name is…, I’m ….. years old. I need help.

By embedding language learning into our everyday family narrative, we ensure that when we finally step out into the world, we are ready to connect, respect, and truly live the adventure.
