finding local swimming spots!
If there is one thing I’ve learned as a travel advisor and a mom of three, it’s that a "beach vacation" isn't always just about the beach. Sometimes, despite the beautiful ocean views, the kids just want to be in a pool. Whether it's the lack of sand in their swimsuits or the ability to swim without worrying about the tide, having a pool option can make or break a trip.
But what happens when your dream rental doesn't have a private pool, or you're staying in an area where "beachfront" actually means rocky cliffs? Sometimes rentals with a private pool are just not in your price point. We totally get it. You don't have to settle for a dry vacation. Especially when it comes to summer beach rentals, let’s work through the options before you shell out tons of cash for that private pool. From shared community splashes to renting a private backyard for an afternoon, here is the Travel Family guide to finding a pool anywhere your adventures take you.
THE RENTAL HACK: SHARED POOLS AND CONDO PERKS
A private pool is often the first thing to go when we’re trying to stick to a budget. However, that doesn't mean you have to skip the water entirely.
Look for "Shared" or "Community" Access: On platforms like Airbnb or VRBO, filter for "Pool," but read the descriptions carefully. Many townhome communities or condo complexes offer massive, well-maintained shared pools that are often less crowded than you’d think during midweek.
The "Mountain" Compromise: As I recently discussed with one client, many rentals in scenic or mountainous areas might not have beachfront access, but they almost always prioritize a great pool area to compensate.
Neighborhood Amenities: Sometimes, a rental will include "Guest Passes" to a local neighborhood association pool. Always message the host to ask if they provide access to any local clubhouses and if there is an additional cost to access these amenities.
SWIMPLY
If your rental is pool-less but you need a dedicated "pool day" for a birthday or a special celebration, Swimply is your secret weapon. Here’s a $25 credit, courtesy of Travel Family!
Swimply allows homeowners to rent out their private pools by the hour. It’s a fantastic way to get a luxury, private experience without the luxury price tag of a five-star hotel.
Locally, we recommend the Helmer Pool in Frederick!
When to use Swimply and why we love it!
Travel Birthdays: Make a birthday stand out with a fun pool day!
Change of Scenery: Try something different for the day.
Group Travel: Splitting an hourly rate among two families is incredibly budget-friendly.
THE Y HACK
This is one of my favorite "pro-traveler" moves. If you are a member of the YMCA at home, check their Nationwide Membership policy. Many YMCAs allow you to use facilities at other locations across the country for free or a very small fee.
If you aren't a member, or the local branch doesn't participate, look into Weekly Guest Passes. We paid $95 for a family membership in the Outer Banks, including access to their indoor and outdoor pools!
Gyms and JCCs: Places like the Jewish Community Center (JCC) or local high-end gyms often sell weekly family passes that include full access to their aquatic centers.
The "Y" Advantage: In places like the OBX, joining the local Y for the week can be a game-changer for rainy days or when the ocean is too rough for the little ones.
HOTEL DAY PASSES
Did you know you can often use a luxury hotel’s pool without being a guest? Sites like ResortPass allow you to buy day passes to major resorts. This is a great way to spend a "lazy day" after a long travel day, enjoying a special dinner and a high-end pool deck without paying the $500+ nightly room rate.
MAKING MEMORIES ONE SPLASH AT A TIME
At the end of the day, family travel is about core memories and connection. Sometimes those memories happen while jumping into the ocean, and sometimes they happen during a quiet afternoon at a local community pool. By planning a little bit ahead—checking for weekly memberships or scout out a Swimply rental—you can ensure your family stays cool and happy, no matter where you are.
