fathers’ day

our travel dad

My kids have the best dad. He’s fun and has bottomless energy until his head hits a pillow at 9 pm and he instantly falls asleep. How do men even do that?

He’s also such a fun travel buddy. Do I wish that he knew what airline we were flying before we were driving to the airport? Yes. Do I wish he knew a bit more about the plan and our activities? Maybe but I love the way he goes with the flow and let’s his Type A planner wife make all the decisions.

Over the past year, my husband has been unemployed due to government funding cuts. He’s been living his best stay at home dad life, and he really thrives in that role but I acknowledge that it can be exhausting. And he deserves more appreciation than ever this year.

Here’s some ways we will be celebrating him this year:

  • no silly gifts, socks or belts. We are focusing on experiences and doing his favorite things: Family walks, playground time, romping around in a creek.

  • giving him our blessing to spend time indulging his hobbies: want to watch a weird foreign film? Go off, I’ll be bingeing housewives in the other room.

  • getting his favorite foods - pollo a la brasa, here we come.

Planning a Fun Day for Dad

Skip the mug. Skip the grill tools.

Here's a Father's Day guide based on the type of dad you're celebrating:

☀️ Sip & Sun Dad

🥾 Creek & Chill Dad

🍺 Beer Town Dad

🥃 Bourbon & Bad Ideas Dad

🍷 Fancy Dad, Farm Views Dad

Our recs for the perfect day with some local recs specific to Frederick, Maryland.

Sip & Sun

For the dad who wants a drink in his hand and zero responsibilities.

  • Stroll along Carroll Creek Park and stop into one of the breweries or distilleries downtown.

  • Grab a flight at Orchid Cellar Meadery, True Standard Distilling or a tasting at McClintock Distilling.

  • End with patio time and people-watching along the creek. Frederick's downtown beverage scene is one of the area's biggest draws.

Creek & Chill

For the dad who says he doesn't want anything... but secretly wants everyone outside.

  • Explore Pebble Beach at Catoctin Creek Nature Center and let the kids splash around.

  • Pack snacks and spend the afternoon creekside.

  • Zero schedule. Maximum dad happiness. Frederick is known for its parks, trails, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Bourbon & Bad Ideas

For the dad who likes a little friendly competition.

  • Head to Dragon Distillery.

  • Sample spirits.

  • Throw some axes.

  • Pretend nobody pulled a muscle trying to prove they "still got it."

Dad's Perfect Day

For the low-key king.

  • Coffee downtown.

  • Wander through historic Frederick.

  • Walk the length of Carroll Creek Park.

  • Lunch somewhere with outdoor seating.

  • Home in time for an accidental Father's Day nap. Downtown Frederick and Carroll Creek are consistently highlighted as some of the area's best attractions.

Beer Town Dad

For the craft beer enthusiast. Create your own brewery crawl. Here’s our recommended route!

  1. Start at RAK Brewing

  2. Walk to Steinhardt Brewing along Carroll Creek

  3. Head into Market Street for Brewer's Alley

  4. Finish at Olde Mother Brewing

Fancy Dad, Farm Views

For the dad who appreciates scenery as much as the beverage.

  • Spend the afternoon at a Frederick County winery. Black Ankle and Springfield Manors are some of our favs.

  • Enjoy vineyard views, live music, and a slower pace.

  • Great option for dads who'd rather sit and chat than be "celebrated."
